When does the Bronx and FdNY start doing away with "2nd"sections of the various companies that were formed during these years?  Anyone know who and how many and what becomes of the manpower assigned to these companies?  Happy and Healthy New Year to ALL !!
 
Second sections, squads, etc were disbanded in 1975 during the city's financial crisis. Members of those disbanded companys were assigned to roster openings in other companies.
 
Some of these units were not disbanded but instead changed into permanent units some place else.
 
Very interesting, that 88-2 became 72.  Who covered Throggs Neck 89?  Obviously that a heavy fire load then or now but a long, long ride!

Before that period Throgs Neck was a virtual country club assignment and E-89 used to often relocate to E-64 and L-50 relocated to L-47, 50 & 51. Many times E-61, E-64 and L-47 were first into Throgs Neck.
 
E-72 was in lower Manhattan. I believe they were first due at the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. They were closed years later to form a second section. Then reformed, as mentioned, in the Bronx from 88-2. Anyone know what company was formed?
 
  The original Engine 72 was organized July 1, 1900 at 22 E. 12th St. and disbanded on Oct. 15, 1957 to form E-41-2. That second section of E-41 was in service from Oct. 15, 1957 thru Nov. 15, 1958. E-11 formerly at 437 E. Houston St. was also disbanded on that same date (10-15-57) and reorganized as E-91-2. That second section of E-91 was in service from Oct. 15, 1957 thru Nov. 15, 1958.
 
Heres one...
Engine 46 and Ladder 27 were the only house with BOTH units having Second Sections at the same time during the "war years"

Engine 46 & Engine 46-2
Ladder 27 & Ladder 27-2

This was back when units were at the OLD house that Rescue 3 is at for a few more months...
 
also in the house with E46 & 46-2,L27 & 27-2 was Battalion 56 that was Battalion 18-2.
 
I'm fairly certain at the time the firehouse for E72 was built, consideration was given to establish a truck (L57) as well.  That never came into fruition.
 
Way back when, for many years, E52 operated with two "pieces" (1951 Ward LaFrances).  The second piece was NOT considered a "second section." It was primarily used as a hose wagon for runs in Van Cortland Park when a long stretch and or a relay operation was required.

I remember back through at least the late '60's E201 in Sunset Park had a hose wagon that rolled on all of their boxes between 2nd (maybe it was 3rd) Avenue and the waterfront.  That was for the active piers along the waterfront at the time.  They also appeared to be Ward LaF. open cab rigs.
 
And when the new firehouse on Tremont and Daly was being built for E45, L60 was supposed to have been formed to go in there. Even the construction sign there at the time listed E45 & L60 on it. Has E45 ever gotten into the new building?

A 1968-69 ALF tiller was numbered for L-57 although it was never in service.
 
fdce54 Engine 45 has always been at their original quarters, the new building which is attached to E45 houses Ladder 58 and the 18th Battalion. There are break throughs in walls between the houses allowing access but E45 has always stayed in its firehouse.
 
Thanks, Mac. I remember when the new bldg was completed, E45 was supposed to move in with a newly formed L60 but instead L58 and Squad 1 were moved over from the firehouse on E 176 & Park Ave. I was wondering if E45 had gotten into the new bldg when the squad was disbanded.
