Also, I believe that Rescue 1 will be the last on to be replaced because it is in good condition.

Rescue 1 usually gets the first of any new order of Rescue trucks

H-4542 looks pretty much done except for decals and a rear compartment.
What rear compartment doesn't look completed?  All the compartments look completed except no equipment is in them.

The blue light on the back looks strange?  Do the present rescues have blue lights?  These trucks also look smaller than the existing trucks but I would find it hard to believe with everything they carry.

While a law allowing blue light on FD vehicles has been passed recently. FDNY Rescues have had the blue lights on the rear of them for quite some time. All the 02 models have them.

Does anyone know what the point is for needing a blue emergency light on a fire truck and changing a law to facilitate it ?

The theory goes that the emergency vehicle lights can be seen in any light condition with red/blue lite combination

Up until the law was changed, blue lights were only to be used by Volunteer Firefighters here in New York. NYPD and NYSP have been using them for a number of years now. Actually, I can remember NYSP radio cars with blue lights on them from my childhood in the late 70's early 80's.

PS the MTA is also using blue lights on certain buses in the Bronx. This has been a big discussion to the point of beating a very dead horse on the suburban vollie buff boards.

I've always been of the opinion that, no matter how you paint a rig, and how many lights, bells, and whistles you put on it, somebody is going to find away to crash it, or into it.  ;D

Just seems to me that it's a non-issue. Someone really must have a lot of time on their hands to worry about changing a law regarding the color of emergency lights. And you're right, people are still going to bash into us no matter how big the rig is or no matter what color your lights are

The law was originally changed a few years ago for police to be able to use the blue lights in the rear only. They said you can see the blue light from a further distance and it also breaks up the lighting. People tend to drift towards the red/white lights like a moth to the flame. (especially if they are zoning out and not paying attention.) This law was only changed for the police at the time.

As stated above, the FDs recently had it changed to include them.

Take a look around the next time you are driving at night - whether it's the city or highway, there are red lights (brake lights, traffic lights), amber lights (turn signals, street lights), and white lights (street lights, headlights) everywhere....our emergency lights tend to get "lost" in the background.  The blue lights on the other hand really stand out, especially at night - you KNOW that's an emergency vehicle.  I am all for anything that will help me do my job safer and get me home to my family at the end of the night.

With that in mind, I think it's ludacris to require lawmaker approval to authorize blue lights on the rear of emergency vehicles.  And don't even get me started on the NYC MTA and their flashing blue lights on buses, and flashing red lights on supervisors vehicles - their new work vehicles for subway repair and other non-emergency functions have more LED's on them than most NYPD sector cars!  But oh, they are a state agency, so they are exempt.

10 years from now someone is going to come out and say purple flashing lights really stand out.

Remember the reason fire trucks in NYC and many other cities were painted "Lime Green" was because of better visibility. Some desk jocky thought that was the way to go. After a trial basiswith several FDNY Engines, that theory proved to be wrong.
