Brings to mind the argument in the early 70's about lime green being "more easily seen" and the rush to paint all fire apparatus that horrendous color . . . even FDNY tried it, and sensibly went back to red . . . then red & white.  Some yahoo is always doing faulty research and coming up with conclusions that are out in left field.  Hopefully they don't get anybody killed.

As for blue lights:  police depts in Massachusetts have used them for at least 50 years . . . I can remember driving thru MA as a teenager and seeing those funny BLUE bubble gum machines.  Here in VA, the state cops all have blue lights, and the local cops have a choice of what to use . . . most depts use a combination of red & blue, but there are some that have gone to all blue (including Newport News, my home).  But blue is presently reserved ONLY for the police . . . fire apparatus is still red.  I have to admit . . . when you see those blue flashing lights, especially at night, there's no question about what they are.  As one previous poster said, it dosen't matter what color emergency lights are . . . some drunk or twitterer will ignore them and do their best to wipe you and themselves out.  And one last thing for Deano:  my first car (a '49 Ford) HAD purple taillights (a blue lens in the middle of the red taillight) . . . and they really were cool (anybody else remember them?).

Take a look around the next time you are driving at night - whether it's the city or highway, there are red lights (brake lights, traffic lights), amber lights (turn signals, street lights), and white lights (street lights, headlights) everywhere....our emergency lights tend to get "lost" in the background.  The blue lights on the other hand really stand out, especially at night - you KNOW that's an emergency vehicle.  I am all for anything that will help me do my job safer and get me home to my family at the end of the night.
I agree completely, the red and amber just blend in with other vehicles.

From a UK perspective, there are very strict rules governing what lights are used by different agencies.  All emergency services use blue lights and more recently these have been mixed with white facing forwards and red facing backwards.  In general red lights are only used by command and control vehicles.  There are no amber lights used as these are reserved for other non emergency public utility vehicles, such as garbage trucks and tow trucks.  The only other color light used is green which is reserved for doctors and even then this color is normally mixed in with blue.

I would personally like to see a mixture of red and blue lights on all FDNY vehicles and for the amber lights to be dropped altogether.

For the lazier ones amongst us, here are links to each of these three listings on the Ferrara website. These links should continue to work until the rigs are delivered, and Ferrara removes them from the "In Production" listings on their website. Stay safe all.

Ladder 156 Video

Part of my reply concerning history & info on blue lights in New York that i posted on another site........................swan...reply 32 is an interesting question.......... i dont know who the van in question is owned by ...but...on the light subject ..........years ago on some American La France tiller rigs that had 5 individual yellow clearance lights on the very top front of the cab.....some companies replaced the center three lenses with a red , a white & a blue lens, also several RESCUE Cos. had some blue lights , also BC John O'Reagan BN*11 (who authored the original Ladders 3 manual while Capt. of LAD*26 in the late sixties) tried to start a program to have Tower Ladders replace one of the 4 rotating bulbs in the gumball mars lights with a blue bulb, so from a distance you could identify a particular incoming rig as a TL or not. However the state law at that time only permitted vollies to have blue so FDNY was ordered to remove all blue lights from rigs..........now many years later NYPD wanted them on their vehicles so THEY had the law changed to allow it.........but getting back to the original question.....guys from the HIGHWAY ENG & TRUCK might be able to shed some light on it.......also it seems they are being closely scrutinized in routine actions both on video & audio.

Read more: UPDATE on my reply # 32 above regarding the blue light issue......as i said the the NYPD had the law changed to allow PD to use blue lights....on Aug 30 2010 ...Gov ( I am writing ,not doing a line) Patterson signed a bill which takes place immediatly allowing FIRE apparatus anywhere in New York State to utilize blue hi visibility lights on the rear of any FIRE apparatus as long as they also display one or more red or combination red & white lights.... the blue lights carry very long distances ....have better visibility during the day & differentiate from colors regular vehicles have.....A good adddition ...BUT still use the physical apparatus to block & maintain extreme vigilance at all times when off the rig. .........JK.

Glad to see 5's is moving along nicely. Hopefully it will not be too long before it is in service and I can get some pictures of it.

What's with the fancy wheels?  The next thing you know they will even have chrome bumpers!

Are they new wheels or just hub cap/wheel covers over the red steel wheels?
It looks like covers over the red wheels, because in the other pictures, the truck has just red wheels

I believe they are complete wheels, if you look closely at the pictures you can see the lug nuts as well as everything else is chrome.  It's quite normal to use standard painted wheels during manufacturing and then change them out near the end.  That way they don't get damaged.  I'm still surprised to see them on a FDNY rig!

Thanx, Catry.  I also found references to it on the Pierce site. Do any of the other manufacturers do this?
