Brings to mind the argument in the early 70's about lime green being "more easily seen" and the rush to paint all fire apparatus that horrendous color . . . even FDNY tried it, and sensibly went back to red . . . then red & white. Some yahoo is always doing faulty research and coming up with conclusions that are out in left field. Hopefully they don't get anybody killed.
As for blue lights: police depts in Massachusetts have used them for at least 50 years . . . I can remember driving thru MA as a teenager and seeing those funny BLUE bubble gum machines. Here in VA, the state cops all have blue lights, and the local cops have a choice of what to use . . . most depts use a combination of red & blue, but there are some that have gone to all blue (including Newport News, my home). But blue is presently reserved ONLY for the police . . . fire apparatus is still red. I have to admit . . . when you see those blue flashing lights, especially at night, there's no question about what they are. As one previous poster said, it dosen't matter what color emergency lights are . . . some drunk or twitterer will ignore them and do their best to wipe you and themselves out. And one last thing for Deano: my first car (a '49 Ford) HAD purple taillights (a blue lens in the middle of the red taillight) . . . and they really were cool (anybody else remember them?).
