Years ago, while in Paris, my wife convinced me to take a tour of Notre Dame. Since the nave is open to the public, this involved climbing a narrow, medieval winding staircase to the cockloft. From there, one had a great view of, the town, the gargoyles, and what was basically a roofed lumbar yard.
It is my observation that the builders of Notre Dame made the church so large was for two reasons. First, it was immense to produce the wonder of God. Second, it was to allow a robust masonry structure to remain for a quick rebuilding..... after the roof burned off.
