I'm kinda suprised that they would not try and just get a new chassis. from the after pictures I saw it looked like only water damage, not any physical damage, take the body apart sandblast paint and mount to a new cab or even just a real good power washing ( not sure what material the body is) or heck buy the new one and do a remount when the shop slows down then you have a spare/ something to cruse the beach in durig the summer however I don't know the full extent of damage

Water damages a lot more then paint and the like. Electrical is fried, who knows how much that costs, the fittings are corroded, and the salt water probably took a toll on everything else. Its not worth it to remount. Just junk it and start over.

Also think money from the feds might have had a role in this.  I also thought that they might have rebuilt the unit, first thing I saw coming over the bridge in the AM was the ATRV sitting there.

That certainly sounds a little high for what the unit is!  It's just basically a manifold on wheels with a few compartments and ladders unless they significantly changed the specifications.

I think its for 3 units.
That's certainly what it looks like I looking at the bid sheets.  The unit price is a little over $400,000 in the total is over 1.2 million.  $400,000 certainly sounds high unless the specifications have changed a lot from the past.

For 400k I would hope it had its own pump and came fully equipted and even then it seems real high

Since there was only one bidder, will the bid be thrown out and the whole process started over?

I will look for the spec but when I saw a copy it looked like the same thing as the one that was lost to Sandy.  Some little changes here and there.

If that's the case I certainly don't understand the cost that came into this quote.  Also I'm wondering why they are ordering 3 of these units?  I wonder if the other 2 are going to be issued 2 different units or held in reserve for major storm problems.

Not sure why it looks like it's 3 units, the spec even said 329 in it.  Guess we will found out at some point if it's 3 or just 1 very expensive unit.

How often is the sand rig utilized ? I know there is deffinatly a need for the rig with the type of streets and the neighborhood but I was just curious to see how many runs the atrv takes in yearly.

The bid sheet you posted earlier certainly leads you to believe that it's for 3 units with a unit price of about $400,000, which in itself is extremely expensive for what the old rig was.  If it's going to be $1.2 million for one unit is going to have to be something!

BCR everytime E329 goes toward brezzy they take it and I'm almost sure they take it when responding to Floydd Bennent Field.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was one of those rigs that was  special call only, sounds like it really fills a need that they have with the area they cover. For that price I wonder if they will come with a pump and tank, I could see them having two extras for special events and storms and could respond has a single company kinda like they do with the SOC trucks second piece. We will  have to wait and see as others mentioned the price seems a bit steep for a hose wagon. If they end up with a crew cab f-550 like the last one, with government pricing it's probably only around 50,000-60,000 max so that will be one heck of a body and Equiptment to get it up that high in price

The original "Sand Rig" as it was called  when i passed through 329 on & off back in late '92/early  '93 was strictly a manifold hose wagon (no pumps) ... the Pumper would stay on the paved road @ a hydrant & the Sand Vehicle after dropping  a supply line would proceed to the Fire & then 1 3/4 would be stretched from it into the bldg.... it was a single cab 4 wheel drive truck w/a hose body on the back.....the Rig has to be small enough to fit down the sand lanes & walkways between house's.....increasing the size too much would negate the purpose....also the Rig back then did not have IMO the best tires for sand also it lacked a rapid system to "air down" & reinflate the tires for sand use....often on the beach it did get stuck itself..... as stated before it only went West of the FH to Roxbury/Rockaway Point/Breezy Point...i dont remember it going to Floyd Bennet although 329 was 1st Due there.....the vollies in the 3 communities had some good off road setups.
