I was thinking the same thing, in this case I don't know if going to the vehicle was the best approach although we can't see how it was connected to the engine. That may be why it was done this way. Yes the number indicates the size of the main & if there happened to be a white line painted under the number then it would indicate that the Hydrant was on the end of a main.Does the stenciled 12" indicate the size of the water main?
