Tower Ladders in the Bronx

Should Ladder 53 have a larger response area? Being allowed to leave the island into CO-OP City, etc.

FDNY150 you beg to differ? co op city has over 50,000 apts, 8 parking garages, 3 shopping centers, 6 schools, and 15 houses of worship. How about a power outage? stuck elevators and for fires ever walk up 10 or 15 flights just to get to the fire. and maybe a wind driven fire as they have had in the past. they should NEVER leave the area!

Then have someone put in a request for a relocation restriction, using each reason you have just stated. And, add the caveat that it has to be filled if the company is OOS for more than 30 mnutes.  I will also pose this question to you, what about going down to Country Club, or up toward 51/39 as a FAST Truck?? Would you restrict that?? I'm sorry, I don't see it happening.  You and I will politely agree to disagree. I understand your frustration, really.

As far as 53 goes, I believe they have been given a few boxes off the island, but not too far. I couldn't see the Department allowing them to go into Co Op City, or further away from City Island. If the job could afford to establish another truck, I stand by my opinion it should go to 97.

If they want to disband Ladder 53 then why not give it boxes in CO-OP City. Let Ladder 53 work then they have no reason to disband it.

Years back, way before the creation of Ladder 55 there was talk of moving or even elimating Ladder 19. Remember that the Bronx has the highest percentage of Ladder Companies to Engines & Squads in the city:
Manhattan - 32 to 42 = 76%
Queens -    33 to 50  = 66%
Brooklyn -    39 to 63  = 62%
Staten Is -  12 to 18  = 67%
BRONX    -  27 to 32  =  84%

This is based on the type of building found in the Bronx. When you come down to it, Lad 17-2 was the only truck co in the Bronx to be closed. Yes, the city never created Lad 57 in the Qtrs of Eng 72 as had been planned & also there was talk of Lad 60 in the Qtrs of Eng 45. Instead Lad 58 moved over from East 176 St. to 45's quarters.

Tower Ladders - 50 got there because of the need for Lad 29 to have a rear mount for crossing over Little Hell Gate that seperated Wards & Randals Islands. Now that is filled in & also the French Connection Bridge had been replaced. So L-29 can get a bucket again. Lad 33 lost the 95' bucket because it was unable to get in & out of the new fire house with out several tries. The only 95' in The Bronx are 44, 51, & 58. That's a problem. If I remember correctly Lad 50 had a 95 TL for a while. But looking around the city, the number of 95' TL have been reduced. S.I. lost the one at TL-85 a few years ago besides TL-144 in Queens.

How about moving TL 51 to Eng 97, Batt 15 to Eng 38, & give Lad 39 a Tower Lad. They are going to need it with the increased work load that area has been seeing. Or will Lad 19 be moved to Eng 97? Remember that Lad 32 use to be there.  Besides Lad 50 has the largest first due area & Lad 47 also has a very large first alarm district.

I know that years ago the Co-op City station tried to get a restriction on responses & relocations, but before that could be justified, look in Bklyn where 290/103 & 257/170 both cover Starrett City, Co-op City counter part. There are NO fire houses in that area at all. That is one reason why you will not slow down 290/103 from the high amount of runs that they do yearly. 257/170 are also on the increase.

50 could barely fit the Mack 95 footer in their house. 89 was backed all the way in to the kitchen wall. They couldn't fit the 95 foot Seagrave in there, so they got 51's old 75 footer, and 51 got a brand new 95 footer.

I heard a rumor last year when closing were first discussed that E-46 was closing and L-27 was moving to E-97. Rumor was that the PD wanted that entire building to house ESU.

If Eng 46 & Lad 27 were vacated in deed NYPD would take it. Just drive around the area & see all the command post vehicles that are parked out in the street. ESU is in two key locations & I do not see another ESU unit coming to the Bronx. Yes at one time the Bronx did have three ESU Squads, but that was many years ago. Truck 3 is at the 43rd Pct, next door to 96 & 54, & Truck 4 is at the 50th Pct, B'way just south of West 238 St. There are two in Manhattan, one in Staten Is, two in Queens & three in Bklyn.
So there currently have ten squads, but its the smaller units that they can increase, like they did in Manhattan with Charlie & David One. These two units are not regular ESU units. From what I been told they are not One Truck units.

I think 46/27 is at an ideal location for a firehouse. Those units can go either way on the Cross Bronx Expreeway, and they are able to go North and South without too much diffuculty. They are actually centrally located to respond to any area in the South Bronx from Fordham Rd to the southern most tip of the Bronx. Besides, there's still plenty of occuppied buildings in the area.
I don't pay taxes, and I don't vote in NYC, but just my own honest opinion. Besides, ESU may have guns, but they don't carry hose or aerial ladders like the FDNY does.
"Just trying to cool things a little here". I don't think anybody on here wants to see ANY Firehouse closed.

Bob,
I am sorry that what I wrote got to you, but that plan was in the works over 15 years ago. PD has been looking for your station to house equipment assigned to the patrol boro command that is housed next door to you. One of the main reasons is because the city had a fear concerning weight on the apparatus floor in your quarters. It was 20 to 25 years ago that they tried to re-enforce the floor.

What I want all to know that it was not ESU looking to move in there, but your next door neighbors. They already moved most of the detectives out of that building a few years ago. I guess they need all the space they can grab.

Listen, I understand what you're saying...........I was a cop in the 4-8 before I came on this job...............I heard the jokes then, 10 years ago............but let's not rehash the old "Rumors"...... let's keep'em quiet.............Capeesh? ;)

L39 will not get a TL, or a rearmount for that matter. The streets in Woodlawn are too narrow for them to negotiate. That's why L39 remains a tractor/trailer rig.

Who is the busiest 75 footer in the FDNY then for Runs and OSW?? With the ratio of Ladders to Engines in Brooklyn, some of those trucks run aorund all day and all night long, are there any active good 75ft tower ladders on the Bronx??

JT

I'll take a quick stab and say it is TL111 in Brooklyn for most runs and OSW for a 75' TL. As for the Bronx, I'd say TL33, TL31, TL41 and TL54 are pretty busy but they are all good companies.

In Brooklyn you would have to add TL120 & TL157
In the Bronx you would have to add TL44 & TL51
