From the same collection, this is the rig I cut my teeth on as a kid riding with my "Uncle Jack", sitting between legends Charlie McCrthy and Lt then Capt Bob Farrell. Imagine 13 years old getting an incredible education from the front seat of this tiller of firehouse brotherhood, ghetto life and mankind zipping through this neighborhood at a remarkable time. The Proby is Mel Hazel. He used to come to the firehouse even when he was not working to visit and hang out with me. He received a department Medal for a rope rescue using the newly issued personal harness. Once I was hired by FDNY we lost touch, but miraculously reunited on 9/11 just before the north Tower came down almost taking both of us out of the picture...Mel retired as a Fire Marshal. He and I still keep in touch after all these years and profiled in my book. Great phot, captures the essence of a special time.
