VINTAGE FDNY WAR YEAR LIDS

^^^^^Thanks Disp51 for that insightful and interesting article. Below are helmets believed to have been worn at US Army facilities by civilian firefighters. The white helmet below came from a facility (Base?) in Germany after WWII.

Here are a few more...

After making the leather "War babies" helmet, Cairns and Brother started making composite helmets and tin pots. The tin helmets were common in many cities but were short lived. Here are a few tin pot lids:

Switching to another type of Lid for a moment. At one time FDNY Officers used white dress caps in the warmer months, and blue topped caps in the cooler months. The change date was published on the Orders. Then uniform specs were changed to use white caps all year round. Can anyone tell when this change was made.  I'd guess it may have been in the early 1970s, the O'Hagan years.

Yes, you are correct, the officer I believe also wore a gray uniform shirt that changed to white in the summer along with the white bell cap, this was during the O'Hagen years...I believe Memory Master might have some insightful news as I recall he touched on this topic before. Here is a handful of vintage dress uniform bell hats. Interesting to note, they were originally made out of wool with real leather visor. Take a peek;

Yes, both you gents are correct. Grey shirt & blue cap in winter. White shirt and White cap in summer. Late 60's or early 70's I guess for the switch to all white.  Just for memorabilia sake, you would always see the Battalion Chiefs wearing old white hats while making visits or when operating at minor jobs.

Also looking at the 2 O'Hagan pix, scrambled eggs on the visor for Staff Chiefs and above may have also happened after 1970.

This was the type of uniform dress hat we wore in DCFD, (photo below), looked like an Air Force cap...JohnnyGage top center, 1979
