This is a great article, Dougj193! What a glimpse into the past. As I said, please share what else you discover.

    Roosevelt Island Firehouse

Doigj193, The best place for you to start is at the Mand Library at the FDNY Training Academy on Randall's Island under the RFK Bridge. A Mr. Fred Melahn is in residence there and has a wealth of knowledge. Ask if you need more specifics re access. The library has a history folder on each FDNY...

E88/L38 and the old Bx CO may become historic landmarks

I take it the "Unit" is comprised of the personnel who maintain all those cables? They would be the descendents of the former telegraph wire installers/repairmen? Is the old BXCO their HQS?

    Block Island Hotel Fire 8/18/23

A shame. I believe that hotel is the first thing you see as the ferry comes into dock. Imposing old landmark. Hope they rebuild.

8/14/23 Bronx All Hands Box 3211

L38 was 2d due at both of these boxes...don't know if BARB took them away. Once upon a time, this current box 3211, E48 was third due. The pull box was located at White Plains Rd at Pelham Parkway S. It was the last box going east to which E48 responded from their former quarters. E48 also went...

L41 delayed? Even with no traffic at that time of night doubtful that 38 could beat them into that box.

8/14/23 Bronx All Hands Box 3211

By "beyond the zoo" I refer to that area east of Bronx Park East, south of Pelham Pkwy S., north of Neil Ave, and west of Mathews Ave. This was the traditional 2d due area of L38. I should have been more precise. L38 ran 2d due here to Es 90, 88, 97, 61, 62 (to the north a bit) and even 45 and...

    Last NEW added house

Not sure that the word "landlocked" is applicable to the City of New York. That term usually implies an area cut off from access to coastline by other municipalities or states. (See Mount Vernon, NY.) NYC is comprised of 5 Boroughs (counties), 4 of them on islands. Only the Bronx is on the...

8/5/2023 Bronx All Hands Box 3228

L38 2d due here for over a century, since organized in 1908. Mileage looks like L38 closer (1.8 v 2.0) than both 58 and 32...BUT...BARB determined L38 limited to just one access route, Fordham Rd., often blocked at the BRP and WPR., so changed assignments. Makes sense I guess.

    7/27/23 Bronx 2nd Alarm Box 3509

My sometime 8th grade girlfriend's house...Marian Z...my Irish gf, Kitty S., lived across the street at 2767...fun balancing that situation. The actual Box located at 198th St but this house between 198 and 197th Sts...disputed border between Bedford Park and Fordham...take your pick. Back...

    Gentrification

When the Department organized the first of the new 2nd sections (e.g., E91-2) in the late 1960s, i believe the units initially did not respond to the same boxes. This had traditionally been the custom for double companies of the same number. It was then realized that this practice did little to...
