    10/10/23 Bronx 4th Alarm Box 3563

E88 closer than E38. Do the mileage. My attempt to wrap this up... Box 3549, Van Cortlandt Avenue East and Rochambeau Avenue transmitted at 0343 hrs. Es 79 62 48 81, Ls 37, 32. 56 is the normal assignment. Smoke in the building. Units can not find the source. Looks like 48/56 not available...

    10/10/23 Bronx 4th Alarm Box 3563

Back in the Stone age of my youth, the 52s were a 1st alarm company only. They never left Riverdale for a multiple alarm. The ritzy taxpayers of Fieldston would not truck their feifdoms being uncovered by fire protection for any length of time. Perhaps BX dispatch has seen the wisdom of that...

    10/10/23 Bronx 4th Alarm Box 3563

04/14/2009, 2d alarm Box 3563, fire in taxpayer at 3099/3101 Bainbridge Ave. Same row of stores, though maybe not all connected by common cockloft. And if I recall correctly, there was a similar problem with other boxes being out when this one came in. E88 10-84 ahead of E48 and stretched the...

10/5/23 Bronx All Hands Box 3037

L's 41, 47, 54, 58, what should be the first 4 trucks assigned, all out elsewhere at the same time? Unusual but I guess that happens.

Teutopolis IL Major MVA Leaves 5 Dead and Large Anhydrous Ammonia Leak

Anhydrous ammonia was a primary reason for the establishment of the rescue companies in the FDNY. It was used primarily as a refrigerant in the late 1800s until about 1930. The refrigerators that began to replace ice boxes in the 19teens and 20s were charged with this compound, which could be...

    Firehouse replacement

Is that the future of firehouse architecture? Cubby holes in hi rise buildings? My father worked in L14 in their single house on 125th St. with the spiral staircase. I also recall relocating to E35 and 36 in their original single houses in East Harlem when they were among the busiest working...

    9/20/23 Bronx 10-75 Box 3523

This may have been the home years ago of Artie Donovan, former all pro lineman of the then Baltimore Colts. He later had a career as a comedian and raconteur (with a classic Bronx accent). He related in his book ("Fatso") how he would take his Colts teammates home on the D Train for Sunday...

    9/19/23 Branford CT

Great photos and rundown. Looks like a beautiful home and there might be something to save more than the foundation. Some questions... 1. Was the fire knocked down by deck gun, ladder pipe, or interior attack? 2. What happened to Branford yellow apparatus color?

    New FDNY Tillers

Ok, I will take a shot at it... L52. Lots of narrow streets up there in Fieldston. One to either L27, 37, or 38. Some tight corners in Tremont, Bedford Park/Norwood, and/or Belmont (resp.) And it could easily feed up to either Riverdale (52) or Wakefield (39) on relocation. And maybe L29 or 49...

    New FDNY Tillers

Great point, Mc. Back in the early to mid 20th century, aerial trailers might last up to 30 years, pulled by multiple tractors in its career. The trailer, after all, is merely a "truck", designed to carry stuff. How much $$$ could be saved by some adaptation of this concept? (Now you know where...

    Roosevelt Island Firehouse

I worked in mid town East in those years and often traveled the FDR Drive. I recall the MSU being in there. Wasn't there a WNYF article on this? Perhaps MACK would know?
