100' Ferrara Rear Mount Aerials

L 137, 156 and 123 have been delivered to FDNY Shops, none in service yet (as of 6/15/2011)  See Guitarman's pix under Visit to the Shops.

These new units cost about 1 million each

An add-on order for 21 additional units has been placed as of 6/14/2011.  This will bring the order total to 41

Kind of surprising that they would place the additional order before any of the original ones had even been to a fire!  Not saying they're not going to be good trucks but you would think that they would at least like to see how they would perform before ordering more.  So they could tweak the specifications if nothing else.

You don't give an "add-on" order to a different contractor.  Legally, that would require a whole new bid process.

I heard from a member that Ferrara lost the contract and they went with Seagrave with the new contract.
That's news to me and everybody else who was at the Shops on Tuesday. ???

I agree with Tom (Guitarman);  all that was said at the shops was that Seagrave would have the ability to bid on pumpers, tractor/tiller ladders, and tower ladders.  There was no mention of Seagrave for additional rear-mount aerials.

This sounds a little strange.  When another it goes out I don't see how they can prevent Seagrave from bidding especially considering their history with them.  I agree they can't do a add-on order to the present rear-mount contract with Seagrave but when future bids are solicited I would anticipate Seagrave bidding on them.  I'm certainly not aware of any major problems with the existing ones and they would ban Seagrave from bidding at a future orders.

Bulldog:  I understand why you think Seagrave was banned from reading some of the previous posts, but neither Tom (G-man) or John explicitly said that.  I think it's more likely that the department plans on getting all of the rear mounts it needs for the near future by add-ons to the Ferrara contract, and that it will probably be another 10 years before they order more (IMHO).  Correct me if I'm wrong, guys.

The department puts  provisions in contracts, that allow it to "add on" additional units, probably up to a certain number, for a similar price, or price not to exceed XXX dollars or percentage.  If they choose not to exercise their option on the contract, then a new bid would be placed and open to all qualified bidders.

Looking at Ferrara's "In production" page today (6/30/11), it looks like they're making good progress on this first order of sticks and banging them out quick.  Unit #'s 4509-4512 look almost done for the most part.

4506 and 4508 are off the production page but not yet on new deliveries.  I believe 4506 is designated for L 81 and 4508 for L 24.

Updated shots on Ferrara's site show unit #4509 being lettered for L-169.

Any idea who #4507 is going to?

I was wondering if L24 will be able sport the company's "Longhorns" since the spotlight is TDC over the windshield on the cab roof. ::)
