3/31/21 Staten Island 5th Alarm Box 1150

Foam Operations - Anyone know whether they shut down the Tower Ladders using water before the foam operation began or did they use both at once ? If theyused both at the same time how dicd they keep the water streams from breaking up the foam ?

Were any of the SI vollie companies activated during this box to keep watch over the island?

Excellent job on the run down, keeping it as up tp the minute as possible. Extra satellite for example. Good job.

My goodness E 274 from Flushing Queens going to SI as a HazTech unit. I would have thought a unit out of Brooklyn and maybe 274 backfilling.
I think assigning the farther out units instead of rotating the same close-in units serves as a bit of a training tool to keep everyone fresh especially on incidents like this which are not the norm of daily operations.

Many moons ago 16 engine would relocate to Staten Island at E154 (Hannah street quarters) by taking the rig on the Staten Island ferry. Of course, other Manhattan companies did likewise.
I've seen an 1960's vintage photo of E10's 1954 Mack sitting next to E159's quarters.

( FDNY BOX 1150 - STATEN ISLAND ) - **2 DAY LATER AFTERMATH VIDEO** WHERE THE FDNY BATTLED A MASSIVE FEROCIOUS 5TH ALARM FIRE IN A 2 STORY FACTORY ON DAVIDSON STREET IN THE MARINERS HARBOR AREA OF STATEN ISLAND IN NEW YORK CITY.

About 1100 this morning... no FD units on scene, just OEM, Buildings, NYS DEC Spill Response, a few contractors who looked to be constructing a wooden barrier around the property and a few firms who were assisting in mitigating some of the crap left over from water runoff

Then we at DSNY had to take care of some oily runoff on a few of the blocks around the area as well.

There is a good video on YouTube about this job. Videos of Sat 5 working and showing how hard it is to extinguish oil and flammable materials fire with plain water. Shots of L-80 preparing to go into an aerial pipe operation, foam apparatus x 3 responding as well as Haz-Mat 1 setting up for Decon. And some amazingly long stretches of LDH.

SI response used to be only D 8 and 2 SI BCs assigned to a multiple alarm. 3rd SI BC was not assigned to incident to ensure at least 1 SI chief was available for a new incident. Not sure when assignment changes were made, but back in the days before the VN Bridge, it would take a long time for a Bklyn or Manhattan chief to respond by ferry. Most multiples were handled by 1st due BC, all-hands BC (both from SI) and D8. 3rd BC covered SI, or Richmond, as it was referred to.

Also, no staging BC, no Air Recon BC, no Rescue Bn BC, no Safety BC - how did they ever put out fires?

They've been making 3 battalions work here on the island for like 100 years... no wonder we can't get another one lol

I meant at the same fire. SI multiples got 1 DC (Division 8) and 2 of the islands BCs - not all three. That was assignment into 1980s, years after the VN bridge was opened. SI also had 8th Division disbanded in 1975 so chief officers were limited at SI multiples. SI has had only 3 BCs to cover entire island "for like 100 years" and probably should have had a 4th BC somewhere in the center of SI long ago.

As SI population nears half a million, it still has the same 3 battalions it had with a population of 100,000 back in the 1930 when the 23rd Bn was established in Great Kills. Fire departments in cities with 500000 usually have 4 to 8 battalions.
