35 yrs ago today 10-20-84.....  http://www.fdnysbravest.com/Div7NewsletterJuly2018.pdf  CONTINUED REST IN PEACE TO FF SHANDS ENG*297 & ALSO FF JOSEPH KANAVAN ENG*228 who was killed in a similar accident in BKLYN on 1-25-79.....as dangerous as being in a Fire bldg is .... being outside on the street is dangerous also ...remain alert at all times when out of the Rig for any reason even while backing into qtrs.

l

the car fire in which tony shands was struck and killed generated the job to change car fires from a 10-19(one unit) to a 10-18(1E & 1L)

I also think this incident caused the removal of the rear booster line from future rigs, continue to Rest In Peace FF Shands

I was in 94 Engine in the Hunts Point section of the South BX in 1978 and we would have 4 guys on the back step. 2 SCBA?s in the hose bed and we were ready to go. I was coming back from Manhattan on the subway, going to the Firehouse. I have shorts, sneakers and t-shirt on. 94 is driving by, jump on back step with My Boys and go back to quarters...

I believe Engine Co 38 also had a similar rig (as Eng 305).

I think Enging 38 later became Salvage 3, operating out of the former quarters of Engine Co 48 on Webster Ave.

When Salvage 3 was closed and the firehouse was vacant, I believe it was the scene of Two separate Second Alarm fires.

ENG*91-2 had a new one in '69.....ENG*242 had one which became the original Rig when SQ*1 was re organized in BKLYN in December 1977.

Yes, the Goodyear blimps moored there during the 1965 World's Fair. PD aviation had a spot there also. To the local's it was known as 'Speeds' airport. Linden place was always flooded after 5 drops of rain it seemed and Queens Transit's Q25/34 came through Linden Place which curved into 23rd avenue on it's way to 5th avenue & 119 street in College Point, the last stop northbound. That was the 'Orange Bus' as opposed to the 'Green Bus' of the NYCTA.

The Mack R model in the airport was originally Engine 277's rig. It went elsewhere in 1972 when it was replaced by a CF model Mack.
