The first entry in this thread states that KME was the low bidder (although no number is mentioned), followed by Ferrara and finally Seagrave.  That DOESN'T mean KME will get the contract . . . unless they met all the specs and are considered the best purchase.

It's not official yet. Just like Ferrara getting the rearmount contract.  Won't be official until the paperwork is all done.

A response with no dog in this fight. E-One came to Boston in the early 80's to secure a contract. E-One gave BFD a demo rear-mount, assigned to L-17. House was a busy house E-7, E-26 (2 peice with a squrt) and L-17. They ran that rig to death, every deuce in the city, rig did good. At this time every ladder was a TDA most new rigs were Seagaves with bubble tiller enclosure. Good tillermen were a godsend, how do you replace the guy him on his 14 day vacation? I live in Cicero, Illinois, we have a 100' aerial TDA from E-One. Sharp looking rig, we go food shopping on Sunday morning, we run into the rig of of TL-1, T-2 E-3 when the see our house they use the air horn, drives Bear and Austin crazy, especially at 3AM, bad intersection.

Kme has basically taken over our whole department.  Over 160 engines and 40 tda's.  We were basically the guinea pigs for that company to cut it's teeth on large orders.  Their finishing work still seems to be shotty at best.  Shotty  welds, uneven compartment doors, bad paint jobs, cheep finishing work basically. Also the electrical interfacing is problem some.  Door handles coming off on new rigs.  Kind of sketchy when you need your saws, ladders, extrication equipment.  However they make an aerial ladder that is built like a brick shit house.  There almost like cranes.  However it really comes down to what your department finally accepts on the final inspec. We see the kme guys a lot fixing shit that should have been already done at the factory under QI.  However at the end of the day your department specs. Out the rig.  If you don't spec out adequate finishing work.  You get the  cheap finishings. Spend that extra 10-15 g's. Per rig you'll  actually save that in down time and going into reserve rigs. But try telling that to the bean counters.

Also either hale or waterous makes a half sized 2000 gpm. Pump It's not high pressure. But I'm pretty sure a few minor tweaks and voila.

When will they learn. Seagrave have a great reputation with the F.D.N.Y. they should stay with them. I know the low bit gets the contract but that is alot of rigs to get to find out that they cant hold up to the wear and tear that the FDNY puts on thier rigs. They should make a demo to give to the busy companies to run befor they choose another company to build thier rigs.

The same thing has been said by many others regarding the Ferrera ladders!  Not quite as critical on the rescues because of the number ordered but more critical because of the application!
