Ladder 21 received a new 1890 water tower. It was designed by Kansas City Fire Chief George C. Hale, a fire equipment inventor. It had a 55 foot telescopic mast and was hydraulically raised. It was pulled by 3 horses. It was Ladder 21's alternate apparatus. Water Tower 3 was located at Ladder 21 until 1901.
MICHAEL J. LAWLER FF. LAD. 21 MAR. 29, 1918 1919 TREVOR-WARREN
FF Lawler was awarded the Emily Trevor-Mary B. Warren Medal for heroic work saving life at an early morning fire at 22 West Thirty Eighth Street. FF Lawler rescued Miss Josephine Varral who was trapped on the 4th floor of a boarding house. FF Lawler reached Miss Varral by aerial ladder and then carried her down the ladder.

The Fire College Medal was awarded to all members of Ladder 21-1 for drill and evolution excellence at the Fire College in 1918.
FRANCIS PARKS FF. LAD. 21 FEB. 17, 1919 1920 KENNY
FF Parks was awarded the Kenny Medal for rescues made at a 4-story warehouse fire on E 48th Street where over 30 FFs were overcome by smoke.
MICHAEL J. LAWLOR FF. LAD. 21 MAY 16, 1920 1921 VAN HEUKELOM
Detailed as Aide to the Battalion Chief. FF Lawlor used short ladder and then scaled wall with fingers and feet in building crevices to reach trapped victim on fourth floor. He then passed her across 6 foot span to firefighter in adjacent building.

FF Parks was awarded the Hugh Boner Medal for rescuing, at extreme personal risk, Mrs. Margaret Savage and her two sons, from the 5th floor at 420 W 42 Street. FF Parks was assisted by FF Johnston.
