Division 2 had its origin in Mid Town Manhattan in 1869 as the Upper District, coming under command of the 2nd Assistant Chief in 1883. It was moved to the Lower East Side/East Village in 1906, splitting Division 1, while its previous battalions went to Division 3. With the closure of five Lower Manhattan engine companies and Battalion 2, Division 2 was disbanded in 1948. It was reorganized in 1951 when Battalion 2 was re-established but Division 2 was again disbanded in 1956 to become Division 6 when Battalion 3 moved to the Bronx. Interestingly, Battalion 3 retained their numerical identity in the move but Division 2 became Division 6 in the Bronx. Division 2 was re-established briefly from 1995 to 1997 in Midtown Manhattan.

^^^ When BN*59 was disbanded while at 275 BN*51 was moved from 294/143 to 308 to be closer to the former BN*59 area which was closer to BN*50 & BN*54 to aid them .....in 1984 when 326/160 were opened in the new FH on Springfield Blvd & 64 Ave the 53 was moved there from 306 to pick up some of BN*54s boxes.....also in 1984 when BN*59 was re organized again at 319 the intent was to give relief to the workload of BN*46 & BN*28 however the location at 319 in between the 46 & the 28 only made them available in the slower response areas of both BNs & did little to help with the workload of either BN.....some studies have been done on BN response areas but it seems the conclusion ( & i agree) that just placing a new BN in an area or shifting 1 or 2 BNs around does not really help overall....even relocating all the QNs BNs is not the answer as there are interboro responses with BKLYN which would not be addressed...unless most every BN in BK & QNs were to be relocated to centrally located FHs there will never be equality not only in Response Areas but also not in Administrative areas.....there are several BNs & Administrative Company's that perform Building Inspection duties in their Administrative areas that are actually in their 3rd Alarm Response areas (taking them way out of the picture for a Run on the opposite end of their 1st Alarm Response Area.....126 was one that i worked in)....a glaring example is BN*51 Quartered w/308 on Lefferts Blvd bet 107 & 109 Aves & is the Administrative Chief for the large shopping Mall complex Metro Mall / Rentar Plaza on Metropolitan Ave just West of 69 St (next to christ the King HS) because it is in their LAD*135s Administrative area.....BN*51 would almost never respond even on a Multiple to a Fire at that location but has to go there for Inspections & from there might have to respond to 1st due Box at JFK Airport.....the Admin areas have been studied just as the Response areas but in the end you really would have to move every BN & that probably would never happen....placing a few newly organized BNs strategically would work but that probably will never happen either $$$.

Battalion 55 was organized for the first time to cover the 1939-1940 Worlds Fair in Queens.

1939 Worlds Fair Fire Department:

In September 1938, the FDNY 55th Battalion was formed and stationed at the Fair to man the apparatus. It included three Battalion Chiefs, fourteen company officers, and seventy firemen manning one double and two single engine companies. In addition, sixty-five "Fire Guards" were organized as a private force of retired FDNY members hired by the New York World's Fair Corporation. They operated in a fire prevention capacity, inspecting buildings and patrolling the grounds during the hours that the Fair was open to the public. The Battalion and the Fire Guard were disbanded in 1940 shortly after the close of the Fair. The apparatus was given to the FDNY.

Battalion 51 moved from Engine 294/Ladder 143 on Jamaica Avenue to Lefferts Boulevard at Engine 308 when Battalion 59 was established at Engine 319 in 1984.
When the 59 was disbanded you'd think they would have moved the 51 back to Jamaica Avenue.

With interboro responses, Battalion 28 can cover much of 286 and 291's neighborhoods.
Historically 286 was part of the 37 and 39 battalions into the 1960's, and 291 was in the 35 into the 1950's.
The 28 at 271 is about one mile closer to 286 than the 51 at 294 would be.
The 28 is also much closer to 291 than the 46.

A handful of battalions have served in two boroughs.

Battalion 49 was originally organized in the eastern part of Williamsburg up to the Newtown Creek in Brooklyn. It was disbanded along with Battalion 33 as part of a Brooklyn battalion reorganization in 1922. Battalion 49 was entirely absorbed into an expanded 35th Battalion.

It seems the backing out of Amazon opening in LIC stopped the possible reopening of 261 however Amazon is now opening on a smaller scale near Hudson Yards maybe this will help reopen ENG*2.

Staten Island Division

Staten Island has always had only one Division. However, that single Division has had several numerical identities and has included a portion of Brooklyn in more recent times.
From 1898 to 1906 Division 8 was a Brooklyn division. Staten Island Division companies were volunteer units. Career FDNY companies and the first two Battalions on Staten
Island were first organized in 1905 and became part of Division 8 in 1907.

The 3rd Battalion was one of the original battalions established when the department was organized in 1869. For 87 years it served in the Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan area. Commercial, mercantile, industrial buildings and densely spaced and populated loft and tenement buildings posed major fire challenges. Most fire companies in the battalion had second sections in the early 1900's and were augmented by the high pressure system.

Battalion 19 has been organized twice. It was the original Marine Battalion, placing all of the fireboats in the same command.

"Up until 1905, the fireboats were attached to the Battalions in whose districts they lay. Special Order No. 6, of June 16, 1905, established the 19th Battalion. It read: By direction of the Fire Commissioner, the 19th Battalion, to be composed of Engine Companies Nos. 51, 57, 66, 77, 78, 123 and 132, is hereby organized, to take effect from and after 8 A.M., on the 17th inst., and Chief of Battalion John Kenlon assigned to the command thereof. He will perform duty while at fires on the fireboats."

Battalion 25 has had numerous assignments city wide. It began as a land battalion in the former Brooklyn Fire Department. It moved to Manhattan after the Brooklyn battalions were renumbered. It was then assigned as the Marine Battalion (25) when the Marine Battalion (19) number was assigned to a land battalion in the Bronx. The Marine Battalion was no longer numbered when the Marine Engine Fireboats became Marine units. Battalion 25 returned as a land battalion in Manhattan in the 1970's thru 1980's.
