Never heard the term “bottle stretch”. What is it?

^^^^^^^ A clorox bottle filled with clothesline & a small weight in the bottom.....it can be taken to the floor below the Fire then holding the end of the rope ....drop the bottle out the window ....FFs at ground level attach the hose line which is pulled up to the floor below then advanced to the Fire floor.....this eliminates long interior stretches especially if winding stairs are present.

In reply # 1829 the third photo down inside the Storehouse side of the FH are the old angled hose drying racks used prior to a Hose Tower.....when R*2 moved to 234s old qtrs on Bergen St these racks were still in place.

Pre-FDNY:

Mazeppa Hose Company 42, a company in the volunteer department, was located at their 440 W 33rd Street firehouse prior to organization of Engine 34 in 1865. Their fire house was built in 1848 and was the original quarters for Engine 34 when organized in 1865.


1865 evaluation: "Mazeppa hose, No. 42; Foreman, William Shields? Located 286 West Thirty-third street; performs duty in the first and second districts. House in bad condition ; carriage in good condition ; built in 1859, by Jos. Pine ; present number of men, 20; 200 feet of hose in good condition, 400 feet bad, and 400 feet ordinary. Also a four-wheeled tender, in ordinary condition." - the History Box.





Minute Ladder 62, volunteer fire department, was located at 380 W 43rd Street.

Ladder 21 By Captain Michael T. Farrell

1890 - At the meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners the Chief of Department recommended that Ladder 21 be established. On June 1st
Ladder 21 was organized and located at 432 West 36 street.

1890 - Ladder 21 had 147 runs and 76 workers. The truck had a three (3) horse team, two (2) of which were purchased for $300.00 each. Ladder
21's first job was on June 5th at box 454 located at 10 avenue and West 37 street @ 0330 hours. A second alarm (2-2) was transmitted @ 0332
hours.

1891 - Water Tower 3 was organized and assigned to Ladder 21

1901 - Water Tower 3 was moved to Ladder 24

1902 - Ladder 21 designated a double company on June 1st

1939 - Ladder 21 reverted back to single company. Because of construction of the Lincoln Tunnel their quarters had to be destroyed. On September 1, 1937, Ladder 21 with Engine 34 moved into their new quarters at 440 West 38 street.

Ladder Co. 21 was assigned a Tower Ladder in 1985 as a result of the major fire that destroyed Rescue 1's quarters on West 43 Street (formerly the quarters of Engine 2). The first three trucks responding to this fire, Ladder 21, Ladder 4 and Ladder 24 were all 100' aerial ladders.
