I remember taking that photo during those FDNY War Years. The fire was in a vacant building right next door to the quarters of Engine 45/Ladder 58 and Batt 18. I think 45/58 had been returning from another job and they called over the Bronx radio this fire in a vacant building right next door to their quarters.

I left the job that 45/58 had been at to go to this one. When I got there the fire was already being darkened down.

Notice a line being brought up to the second floor window of that firehouse as well

Yes Ray, you are right - not 1936.

E 326 was located in Old W 8th Street firehouse with E 245 and L 161 until disbanded in 1952.

A picture taken at the 1939 Worlds' Fair: the 1939 Mercury of the 36 Bn along with the department's 1916 Ford . . . which is still on the roster at the museum. Sharp eyes will note the FWD behind them.

Notice the hand crank. Has anyone ever hand cranked an engine?
Cars nowadays seem to need very little rotation to start up, but the 50s, 60s, and 70s models in my family needed at least a few seconds with the starter to run. I can't imagine doing that with a hand crank.

Quite a few fractured hands and wrists from the crank whipping back if you let go too soon. Well, that's what I heard from my dad and grandpa.

1968 (ish) Ford Country Sedan of FDNY Battalion 27, when it was quartered with Engine 82 and Ladder 31. Strange way to mount a siren.

^^^ Ray that sideways siren mounting was common mid '60s....i remember some '65s that the Shops made 2 cuts in the grill & banged the portion in to allow the barrel to fit .....always looked terrible.
