From another forum (NassauFDRant):

"I heard something over the weekend that the rescues have
no power going up hills and that they failed inspection.. The
engines in the rigs are too small .. anyone else hear that?"

Maybe he heard it from the guy from Parsippany?  ::) :p

Here's some information posted Saturday in the thread about the new aerials:

Saturday, Sept. 17th and both L81 & R5 are running with spares. On Friday R5's Ferrara was OOS so they had an E-One spare in their bay while their old E-One was outside parked in the lot. Today they were running with their old (ex-R5) E-One.

Thursday, Sept 22nd and Rescue 5 got the Ferrara back this afternoon. Their ex-R5 E-One is once again parked at the far N/W end of the lot. Ferrara lasted 48 hours last week then had to go back. ::)

The new rigs suck they cannot hardly make it up a hill or over the Verazano.....someone should be held accountable.....but why bother doing that just order some more....total bullshit......P.S. chalk this up on the list w/the ridiculous rigs the Chiefs are forced to respond in & do not buy the excuse about the Job not wanting gasoline pumps in qtrs. .....NYPD uses gas cards to purchase it at a gas station just as ALL Ladder & Special Units do to get gasoline for their power equiptment as well as the Fire Marshalls & the gasoline powered second pieces of some Units......they can shove all the fancy lights & other uneccesary additions .....get some functional rigs.

What amount of horsepower do these new motors have?  And is the chassis heavier than the previous models?  Just trying to think why these would be under powered.

Could very well be that with all that stainless steel, plus equipment and crew, they are too darn heavy! With stainless bodies you get superior corrosion protection but they weigh a lot more than galvaneal and certainly a lot more than aluminum.  I was told thare are two ways around this.  One could be to reprogram fuel controls or trasmission shift patterns and the other would involve a new rear end gear ratio. Outside of the stainless steel stuff, I  don't know if any of that is for certain, but it sounds smart to me!

Could be. I will say my department has owned 13 Pierce rigs since 1997 and all we ever had for body choices was 5052 Al and Galvaneal.  Do the new rescue's have the 2011 EPA compliant motors?  We just bought a rear mount from Pierce and were able to "reserve" a pre 2010 motor for it.  Some diesel engine mfr's were using a chemical tank to "scrub" the exhaust gases and I heard they had a fairly good sized drop in horesepower to boot.

You may be right though!  I still say they're probably overweight.

Surely these Rigs would have been put through, and passed the Hill Climb Test, in order for them to be now in service...

Is the Hill Climb Test carried while the rig is fully loaded up with all its equipment??

I believe they do have 2011 EPA compliant motors.

They do have 2011 motors.

As for their reported poor performance; this is alarming.  However, it's too soon to throw stones.  This is a new product and they will need some time to straighten everything out.  As someone said, fuel and transmission mapping will have to be modified.  There are ways to increase the output of an engine and we'll have to give them time to figure it out.

If the EPA conforming engines are the problem then it really doesn't matter what manufacturer it is meaning that Seagrave, ALF or whoever would  suffer from the same ills. Wouldn't it be nice to exempt emergency vehicles from these restrictions? Remember the good old days when rigs were simple and anything could be fixed with mechanic's tools? ;)

I would think these vehicles when they leave the manufacturing facility are mapped out for highway speed driving and then when they are delivered have to be remapped or flashed for city use.

Maybe the new EPA regulations for the engines are part of the problem but the manufacturer should have known this is a possible problem and have compensated for it prior to delivery!  There's no excuse to deliver a product with poor performance.  While the new specifications are different than they have ever been everyone has known they were coming for quite awhile and it doesn't appear to be affecting other vehicles to this extreme!  They certainly could have put the larger engine in from the start.
