Can anybody here (FDNY member) tell me what the general timeline has historically been for new apparatus to be placed into service from the time the city receives them?  (I know it's a loaded question - feel free to elaborate if necessary).

-Thanks!

I can't give you a specific timeline, but this recent batch of Rescue's and Rearmounts from Ferrara has taken a long time.  I wish I could give you an answer, but I can't.

Mr Bopp, Im not a fan of anything. I just have experience with both Pierce, Seagrave, and ferrara with my career department. My career dept doesnt come close to the call volume that the fdny does. The city of Pittsburgh recieved 4 Ferrara rearmount ladders in 2000. My company recieved on of these new ladders and from day one there was more problems with ours and the other 3 that the city had. We used a 17 year old spare more then we used our brand new rig. Pierce and seagrave seem to hold up very well. Im not saying that Rescue1 doesnt go out of service! But i dont think its as often or has the problems that all of the new rigs have. You say that seagrave are rust buckets that may be so after 8 to 10 years of hard use but if you may remember the macks were rust buckets but other then that were one of the best rigs going in there time. Seagrave has seemed to hold up well with the fdny and takes the abuse and wear and tear thats what makes them good trucks. What im saying is other then minor issues there is no excuse for a now rig to have the problems as these ones do. In 2009 the City of Pittsburgh recieved Pierce and Seagrave rearmount ladders and the 4 Ferrara ladders were placed out of service and have since been taken off the roster as they were not reliable enough to be used as spares after 9 years. So maybe that should tell what kind of rig Ferrara is.

Easy brother, Mr. Bopp's my father  ;)

I appreciate your insight on Ferrara and it's a shame to hear that they had such a short and seemingly poor service life.  Hopefully we don't suffer that same fate.  However, in our case, we're dealing with a completely new chassis, body and engine.  This is a new rig from the wheels up and it's getting a little silly when people (not necessarily you) have fitted these rigs for a toe tag when they've yet to see any length of service.  Give'em a chance guys.....sheeeeesh

No disrespect to your father. What i am trying to say is that many companies in the FDNY run 3000 to 4000 runs per year. thats alot of wear and tear on a rig in its service life. Looking at the problems the new rigs seem to have both ladder and rescue well there is no excuse for a brand new rig to have the issues they have been having. With my Department my company runs about little over 700 runs a year and the Ferrara ladders we had didnt hold up at all.

I got some pix of R-2 today, but, not that great.
Was it in service?  We haven't had any confirmation of any of them begin regular service yet.

R4 has been using their's for at least a week or so. I have seen them on numerous occasions with it.

I was watching the feed from WNBC and R4 seemed to be attending the helicopter crash. Looked like the new unit, but only saw it from the rear.

Ferrara Rescues have leaking roofs, I heard they were sent back for repairs. That explains why the last time a Ferrara mechanic was at R5, he spent the afternoon on the roof. Also, the rear axles don't track correctly.

Those are the types of problems you don't expect for a new piece of apparatus.  Leaking of the roof is certainly not excusable and if they're going back to the factory for this it must be a design problem with how they joined of the panels.  Tracking of the rear axles is either something very simple to repair and just a QC problem or else a very major problem!

R5 has been using their E-One while their Ferrara has been OOS for a couple of weeks, parked in the lot until about a week ago.

I dont think these rigs will make 5 years. These rigs are under built and under powered which is a death sentence for an FDNY rig. Ferrara is clearly in over its head. And lets not forget the geniuses who signed off on the specs, and ultimately took delivery of the rigs ,  they are equally to blame.  You would think that after well over a hundred years of doing this they would have it figured out.......nope, its really a joke the way this played out. Now we're stuck with em. Sorry but stupidity aggravates me. I feel better now :)

The job made the mistake of buying five untested rescues back in 1996 when they bought the HME / Saulsbury's. The HME cab / chasis of those rig's was horrible and the crew riding area made the rigs too long. Hopefully, the Ferrar issues will be corrected. Does anyone know how Haz-Mat 1's Ferrar held up?
