Mary Weiss, from Jamaica, Queens, died January 19th at age 75. She was the lead singer of the Shangri-Las whose song "The Leader of the Pack" was the number one pop song in 1964'
The golden age of the girl groups was the 1950's and 60's. The New Orleans girl group the Dixie Cups also had a Billboard Hot 100 No 1 hit in 1964 with the "Chapel of Love". The Shirelles, the Marvelettes, the Crystals, the Exciters, the Cookies, the Andantes, the Chiffons, the Ronettes were then gone. Yes, the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas (who I saw in person at the Apollo Theater; that was a memorable experience) lasted a little longer.
The cause: Guitar Rock groups, the Brits, Mafia invasion of the music publishing industry, touring for young girls (as young as 14- 15 years old), particularly in the South.
It was great while it lasted!
