If I remember correctly, there was a long-time well-respected lieutenant in Ladder 30 named Dick Gilroy. I know he was there in the '60s.
I notice from what you can see of the name inside the crown "R. G..."
Perhaps it was his helmet. I believe he passed about 15 years ago.

Notice on the L30 helmet the "repair job" on the rear brim...very common in the war years era, and most likely done by Samson Zats in Queens who did all our repirs before the quartermaster system.

Interesting post of a SQ*4 Patch...personally i doubt this was an original 1976 Patch however a Great Tribute to a Historic FDNY War Years Unit ...who did "10.000 RUNS 1970" ....SQ*4 was organized at the Qtrs of 231/120/BN*44 at 107 to 109 Watkins St bet Pitkin & Glenmore Aves then shortly after moved to 214 Bristol St bet Sutter & Blake Aves with 283 for most of the FDNY War Years in the center of busy Brownsville BKLYN ...then they moved along with 283 to an new FH including DV*15 on Livonia Ave corner of Howard Ave. until they were disbanded in 1976... www.ebay.com/itm/FDNY-Squad-4-Disbanded-Fire-Department-Patch/273843797728?hash=item3fc25cbee0:g:r5kAAOSwL6Fc2KJE
