Thank you very much! I have to report that I was trapped on a cruise ship for 5 days but now I am free!
And I guess you are going to say you were being held captive by a female! 8)

As of November 30, 2014 there will be a few Westchester County Con Ed Gas workers who will be very sad. The tears are starting to flow already as that date quickly approaches. Those Con Ed employees are about to loose a great boss. That boss, as we know him here as site member "fdce54", aka Frank D. After serving 41 years with Con Ed Gas Division, Frank is hanging up the old hard hat. Yeap, the guy that once started out in the South Bronx during some of the toughest years, is retiring. And as I understand it, those other Con Ed Guys are not too happy about it. Those Con Ed guys want him to stay, but the paper work is in. For those guys, the party is about to end shortly.

Frankie D., born and raised in the South Bronx on Elton/155 St, then moving up to Clay/169 St, and finally to Valentine Ave/198 St, this Bronx Boy has seen it all. Yet despite all odds, somehow he made it. His latest beat has been Westchester County working in places like Yonkers, Mt Vernon and the surrounding towns. "fdce54" now resides in a small peaceful town in Orange County.

For "fdce54", no more cold nights out there. Now during those cold winter mornings, he can look out the window and get back under the covers if he wants. Or make up his favorite hot cocoa and watch TV. He'll probably want to tune in some of his old favorites. "Car 54 where are you", Abbott and Costello, or maybe "Laurel and Hardy". Maybe he like Westerns like "The Lone Ranger", "Roy Rogers". Maybe he might want to watch cartoons like "Casper the Ghost", Felix the Cat" or "Donald Duck". Retirement will give him a chance to catch up on the ones he missed while digging up those South Bronx streets. Sounds exciting whatever it is he decides to watch.

And here's another important fact about "fdce54". Frank is the ONLY person to take part in EVERY Get Together since they first started. In the beginning, Frank will tell you they were called "Member Meetings". To this day, his most memorable moment during those Get Togethers was the time he sat next to his good buddy, the Most Reverend CFDMarshall, and the Rev opened up his winning prize. What a special moment that was.

Frank, the truth is, "you got a lot of friends here". We all wish you the best for many years of a happy and healthy retirement.

Well Frank, aka "fdce54", your First Official Day of Retirement is here. As of November 30th, you were all done. No more out in those cold winter nights. Now just sit back, pour yourself another hot cup of coffee, throw on the tube and watch the rest of those poor people drag themselves into their daily routine. Not for you though, those days are OFFICIALLY OVER. Welcome to the lucky group of NYCFIRE Retirees. It just doesn't get any better than this, RIGHT !!

WAIT - A - MINUTE here.

I'm getting URGENT Messages that our good friend, Frank D., aka "fdce54", DID NOT RETIRE. This just can NOT be true. I'm sure there's been a mistake somewhere. Frankie D., Not Retiring?? After 41 years of being out there days, nights, weekends, holidays, hot summers, cold winters. From the ghetto streets of the South Bronx, to those rich snobs in the elite Westchester County.

What happen ? I don't understand. But the OFFICIAL word now, is as it comes across the presses, is that Frank D., did NOT retire. Instead he is hanging in there through another cold winter for a couple of extra shekels. He just sent me a picture a few days ago of his street where they got 10 inches of snow.

Frank, as your good friend, and as many of your retired friends will tell you, PLEASE reconsider. We all understand the effects the almighty dollar can have on us. I've been through it myself. But we sure like staying home looking out the window on those sub zero January mornings.

Anyway, hope to see you soon. Regardless of what you do, "we all still love you".

Well Rev, "CFDMarshall",  "Happy Belated Birthday". I hope you enjoyed yourself on that trip. But while you were enjoying yourself on that cruise, your buddy, who calls himself "fdce54", was out there in the streets of Westchester County, N.Y., still working. But you CF, as well as many of us know the story of the "Con Ed Comeback Guy". He could have been retired way back last November, 2014. But instead he was out there in the streets during one of the longest, coldest winters we've had in a very long time.

Now the latest talk as we understand it is, he, Frank D., aka "fdce54", claims he is retiring effective July 1st in just a few days from now. Rev., you know how those Red Necks from the deep southern state of Tennessee feel about people who go back on their word. Even up here in the north, like NY, NJ, and Ct,  we got a saying. It goes like this: "Fool me once shame on you - Fool me twice shame on me". Some of us here are not about to buy another "Con-Job" from this Con Ed supervisor.

So as the entire world watches, we all await to see what will actually happen on July 1st, 2015. I understand that both Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun Casinos in Connecticut have considered this as one of their major events of the year. Big money is crossing the tables as the high rollers put their money on -  "Will" he or "Won't" he.

Mr. Dennis, which way is the money going, "Will" or "Won't"? Oh never mind. It's official. I too am now on welfare like Mr. Dennis. ;D

The two Connecticut Casinos will NOT comment at this time on the bets of "will" he or "won't he". I can tell you if the lines of traffic nearby are any indication of how this has attracted today's visitors to these casinos, it is a packed house.

But apparently we all now have the answer. Stop the bets. Finally the decision has been made and is final. Today, June 30, 2015 "fdce54", aka Frank D did NOT have to go to work like he has done over the last 42 years or so. Yes, today he is sporting his fancy flowered sports shirt and shorts as OFFICIALLY a Free Man from the duties of a Con Ed Supervisor. "fdce54" is now officially retired.

From the ghettos of the South Bronx of the 70s and 80s, to today's high society homes of the rich and famous in the most affluent areas of Westchester County, this now Retired Con Ed worker turned supervisor has seen it all.

Those of us that are lucky enough to know Frank will all tell you what a great guy he is. I think we can all safely bet that he will be greatly missed by those he worked with and those who called him "The Boss".

Congratulations Frank for a long and healthy one. You certainly earned it. Just try not to make any more promises to us that you really don't intend to keep. I think you know exactly what we are talking about. Like the one you told us way back in November.

Congratulations, Frank, and welcome to the ranks of the gainfullly UNemployed.  Just remember, that doesn't mean you can stop at every McDonald's, White Castle, and Smashburger you pass (unlike some people do).  8) ::) 8)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES go out to RETIRED FDNY Captain John Bendick Sr, aka "jbendick". Captain Bendick is the father of this site owner Lt Tommy Bendick, aka "tbendick".

Those of us who know Captain Bendick, aka "John", will attest to the fact that he has been a good friend to all of us. He is always there for us.

Also, those of us who know him have the highest respect for him. Not only has he been a good family man, but his past track record within the FDNY is somewhat impressive. John, also a Viet Nam Veteran who served his Country before becoming a FDNY Firefighter.

As a Probie Firefighter he started out at Engine Co 96 in 1968, just as the very busy FDNY War Years were beginning. Shortly after he was then assigned to the very busy Squad 2 in the South Bronx. Part of Squad 2s duties was to spend time with some of the busiest companies in the world. Squad 2 in the quarters of Engine 73 on Prospect Ave during the day tours. Night tours would be rotated between Engine 73, Engine 82, and Engine 85. All of those FDNY companies have been written about in various FDNY War Years Books.

Later when Squad 2 was disbanded, then Firefighter John Bendick was assigned to Engine Co 75. Around the same time, the West Bronx was starting to burn and Engine 75 was right in the middle of it. The West Bronx Fire Activity had taken off. FF Bendick also spent time in the same firehouse, on Jerome Ave at the time, as Battalion 19s Aide.

Through promotion he became a Lt in Engine 68. The fire activity continued as well as my personnel buff trips to chase them did. I couldn't begin to tell you how many fires I saw that both Engine 68 and/or Engine 75 were at. Hundreds I am sure. I once said to John, "did you ever notice me down there with a camera and scanner in my hand" ? And like most members of the FDNY with their quick wit he said to me, "Well Willy, if you weren't wearing a skirt, I probably didn't" !!!

Next, now Lt John Bendick was promoted within the FDNY again. Promoted to Captain of Engine Co 23 and making this his new second home in the "Center of the World". The place where huge ships, rail lines, subways, traffic and millions of visitors from all over the world make this their destination. Where every one of them depends on the FDNY to be there for them. It is an area surrounded by water with huge bridges and tunnels. There are blocks and blocks of high rise apartment buildings, office buildings and hotels. There is probably no other place in the world that can offer a firefighter such a huge challenge. It was then Captain John Bendick, who was the Commanding Officer of such a company.

For those of us who know Captain John Bendick he has opened the door to his home for all of us. We are all honored to have such a good friend. And his wife "Maddy", as John calls her, has ALWAYS been so good to all of us. Sitting down listening to a bunch of OLD GUYS talking about the Fire Department, certainly takes a Special kind of woman. It's NOT every wife that can do what she does.

I think it has been mentioned somewhere here, Retired Captain John Bendick and his wife, are grandparents to 14. Yes that's FOURTEEN, grandchildren. So with today being Grandpa Bendicks Birthday, you can bet it takes a pretty big birthday cake to feed everybody at the Birthday Party. And I bet it takes a lot of Birthday candles too. One for each year, right ? Well I gotta tell ya, "that's a lot of birthday candles to put on that cake". It better be a BIG ONE !!!

  HAPPY BIRTHDAY JOHN.
