L32 is the first busy company for one of the ferraras, i do hope it works out for them as a company..see how long the rig lasts at the sharp end of Da Bronx..

Would it have been possible to have FDNY check out one or two rigs on a performance check. When Boston decided to go to E-One on a RM order they got a demo rig. Rig was delivered to L-17 (E-7/L17) in an area which gave them access to all sections of the city. They ran that rig non-stop, truck on the second alarm, etc.

Yes, in the past, FDNY has assigned new types of rigs to certain companies to prove their worthiness. Examples: 1981 Lime green Macks went to E10, 41, 42, 45, 46, 58, 85, 94, 236 & 277;  1982 Mack RM: L30 & L132; 1990's Seagrave 110ft. HD ladders went to L4, L30, L132 & L165; E-One demo pumper went to E8, E290; 2001 Ferrara  & ALF went to E283. What happened this time? ???

I remember getting pixs from Joe Pinto about L 30 and 132. Why did this experiment fail, wasn't it a short wheel-base rig? By the way 19/20 on your test, young dudes have no chance!!!

The two Mack/LTI rearmounts did O.K. but were not kept as spares because they were different than the rest of the fleet.

..........gman that is a good question ...the jury is still out....i hear someone will get spanked for it....in your list above .....ENG*275 also had the E One "Hush" pumper ...the best thing about that rig was the siren.....seriously ...to get to the motor which was under the hose bed for any serious repairs...the hose had to be removed which sucked but the crew area was cavernous....i think another ENG also tested it in addition to 8..290 & 275......also on the 110 ft HD Ladders...they were assigned to 4..38..165 & ??......i covered in LAD*132 for awhile & i thought the Mack was a nice rig.

Chief, was it 64-Engine that demo'd that E-One also (in addition to Co's u listed)?
I was always surprised that they never went with more of the Mack/LTI rearmounts.....didn't it have to do with not being a "sole" mfg?

.......I'll have to keep my eye out for 32-Truck on the border box runs!

As mentioned above L 32 receivd their new rig.

It entered service on 11/4/2011.

In addition L 24 received their new truck on November 8, 2011.

Four of the twenty units on the first year order are in service.

Chief,I believe most of the LCC's like the rig too. Lenny Johnson (RIP) thought the LTI aerial was far better than the Seagrave. Frank A. thought the rig had possibilities of tipping.  The job made a decision that the rig was TOO top heavy and therefore didn't order anymore.
The E-One rig none of the  companies like because of the HIGH hose bed and a few other things

  Oops, ::) I meant to say L38 & L49 instead of L30 for the Seagrave HD110ft. aerials. ;)

L38 and L49 also had the 110ft aerials

R*1...sounds like you are correct on ENG*64 being the 4th co testing the E ONE............JOR ...i worked w/all the LCCs in LAD*132 great guys...Lenny J. RIP....Frank A....John A...Stan K. RIP......as i said i liked the rig in the short time i was there however i did not know about it being top heavy.......as far as the E ONE hose bed being high ...yes that was because of the motor being underneath the hose bed....that was why it was called HUSH since the front cab did not have the motor noise....all in all in the past rigs were tested in small numbers & a decision was made before ordering a large number like 54.

I was thinking about the testing of new equipment before major purchases were made.  It seems like in the past when a couple of new units were purchased before large purchase was made the reason for the change was usually different.  Most of them, maybe all I'm not quite sure, were made because the equipment previously been purchased was no longer available.  In this case the change was made because of competitive bidding.  This type of change probably doesn't allow sufficient time for testing of a new design prior to a major purchase because of the age of existing equipment.

Well we should start getting an idea of how the Ferraras will hold up with Ladder 24. It was running all evening from call to call. Right when they pulled up to quarters they were going out on the next call. Never had a chance to back it in. Got a picture of it I'll post up tomorrow...

You're right Len, L24 along with L4, 32, 113, 123, 132 & 165 are very busy and perfect for proving whether these rigs good or bad.
