FDNY Pumpers awarded to KME

Almost hard to believe we're replacing 2008s. Time really does fly.
It's really strange that they are replacing 7-year-old engine companies.  Are these units particularly beat for some reason or other possibly some other reason they are being replaced so early?

Wonder if the low bidder will necessarily be awarded a contract. namely KME?
There is still the open question about the fact that while KME was the lowest bidder, Seagrave was the lowest zone award" as mentioned in the thread about the new bids.  Nobody really knows what that means.

Excellent as KMEs have proven to be; just wish the new batch would be Seagrave or comparable like Pierce [which thus far has not bid on FDNY]. E-ONE's bid is surprisingly high. Don't really care for any more from the Louisiana firm : pumpers or ladders.

Pierce does not make a a stainless Steele cab as per fdny spec . Only seagrave, Ferrara ,and kme make Steele cabs. E-one may be in the process of making one also if they bid on fdny pumpers.

I think the reason for Pierce not bidding is for a lot of other reasons and not because of the stainless steel cab.  Changing their process to make a stainless steel cab would be extremely easy to do and wouldn't be a major issue.

I've said this before....

I do not understand the brand loyalty people have.  Everything is built to a Dept. specific specification and thus, each product is unique.  I've worked with departments that have had Seagrave, Pierce, KME, E-0ne, Saulsbury, Sutphen and Ferrara....typically, what makes one rig better than anther is the spec.  Thats been my experience.

**The one exception that I've found, has been Ferrara.  The construction quality and quality control are highly suspect.  Low bid always wins, but I'd love the ability to steer away from them if i could.

As of today Jan 7th, 2016  there are still 7 New KMEs awaiting to go.into first line service.

E 305 & E 168  should be going.into service any day now.

The final 5 of the 91 pumper contact are E 253 - 3 - 317 - 225  & 22...

E 253 & 3 have had there radios installed and programmed and back at the shops. I think E 317 is also in Queens and should have there radio programmed the beginning of next week.

I would take a wild guess and think that all the KMEs should be in first line service by the middle of February.

I saw E168's new KME on the Verrazano bridge heading towards Staten Island. It had no equipment on it. I'm assuming it was being delivered to be placed in service. This was Friday 1/8/16 approximately 2pm.

Yes E 168 did go into service on Friday the 8th in the afternoon .....l was also told that E 305 placed there new rig into service also on Friday the 8th. I saw pics of E 168s
new rig in quarters after it was placed into service.....

For those keeping track E 317s new KME ( Reg # KP 16045 ) had the radio programmed  on Friday....

The last 2 rigs that will complete the 91 pumper contract are E 225 and E 22
