FDNY Pumpers awarded to KME

The five 1996 Saulsbury rescues had HME cabs. Saulsbury always built a good product, the HME portion of those rigs were junk.

Stamford, Ct has several "HME" rigs, and I think most members in the Stamford FD would agree with "69mets".

The rear mount cabs shells are made by truckcab a company that manufacturers many cabs for the major manufacturers. The shell is bare metal when it arrives at Ferrara. The chassis and all other components are built and installed by Ferrara, not HME. HME provides the Intruder II and Ember chassis for Ferrara.

Massfireman is correct. Truckcab is the original manufacturer of the Cincinnati Cab! They have been providing speciality cabs for many many years. The first one I rode in was a 69 Howe pumper.

Does Seagrave build their own cabs from scratch, do they also use a third-party cab manufacturer? I ask because if you really look at the cabs of the Seagrave and Ferrara, other than different window shapes of the front doors and different grills, they look identical. It looks as if the same cab manufacturer makes the cab for both companies.

Seagrave builds their own cabs, I have been to the factory for delivery inspection and was able to see their build start to finish. There are some different pieces that are outsourced but almost all manufacturing is completed in Clintonville.

Pierce builds their own cabs, chassis and bodies.  I've been there several times and watched the different processes take place.

Hello, Is it not true that in the 90`s  fdny ordered kme pumpers  (maybe 1O )  and sent them back ?

Never heard that...i would say no.

I remember either in the late 8O`s to mid 9O`s sometime in that time frame I knew someone who used to go to kme and I'm positive they were telling me that fdny were ordering engines from there and even maybe they were delivered and then sent back or cancelled....  l do not see anything on google or anywhere else...

Any updates on the engine being built

Companies in the first round have been asked for a copy of their company patch.  The first rig is under construction, no others will start until build is approved.

I am curious to see if the rig will make the cut

The rig WILL make the cut.  Eventually.  These rigs are being handled differently, by different people than the Ferrara aerials.  One will be built and evaluated by shops personnel before full production.

Maybe this will help eliminate some of the initial problems with the rigs but it's not going to do anything to help make them more durable and trouble-free in the long run.  The Ferrera ladders had lots of growing pains but are doing all right at the present time but they too are still very young and only time will tell how good a truck they really are!  Unfortunately, a short testing period can only do so much.
