FDNY Pumpers awarded to KME

Does this mean a 13 year old pumper can't respond to an EMS run? Or better yet, a 12 year old ladder truck cannot take in a sprinkler, water leak, elevator emergency or water rescue? ??? ::)

YES under the UFOA contract the rig only moves for FIRES.  This also means no BI, ROCK, and no getting the meal.

Now the UFOA says they will deal with the city, maybe they will say ok, we respond to all runs but no BI or Training.

Just an update for everyone, Seagrave was given an add-on order for 8 2000 GPM pumpers to replace those damaged during Sandy in addition to 7 squad pumpers and 7 high-pressure pumpers.

Thanks for posting the photo.  I guess the ECC won't be keeping the hydrant wrench in his footwell anymore.  What's with the half size doors?

I believe this only is for front line apparatus. Spares are not included in that. They can be older

Photo taken by Chief Reeves, Syracuse Fire Dept. while at the KME plant on business, he noticed the cab sitting outside. After a little questioning, they admitted it was the prototype FDNY pumper split-tilt cab. He snapped the pic with his phone intending to get more when he walked back thru, but it was gone when he got back. "Top Secret" I guess......

So your 12 year old rig which might still be in decent shape will be pulled from you and replaced with a 16 year old spare that is a POS and in the eyes of the law and the contract, that is good? Looks like you guys finally have gotten the cart completely in front of the horse too.

Your front line apparatus is that your regular assigned vehicle, if it is passed contract agreement then the stipulations of contract can legally be used. If regular apparatus is OOS for repairs or such then yes you can use a spare which is older but that is for short duration hopefully. FYI in todays world all units get new apparatus when do for one, in older days new rigs went to busy units every few years and then there rigs were assigned to "slower" units. Also spares are regularly maintained and PMP'd to be kept in as good as shape as possible.

Hmmm. I saw a pic of the prototype KME cab today.
How did it look? ???

Still in beginning stages. Photo via Chief Reeves, Syracuse Fire.

Via Chief Reeves , he was informed this is NOT the FDNYs KME pumper cab. They now told him that at the factory today that it was a cab for York, PA....he apologized for misinformation he was given.

So it sounds like they don't have anything built yet right? There going to be in a tough spot soon, at what point do you say this isn't gonna happen and rebid or go to the next bidder ? Or are they in the predicament where they say we are this far in and are passed the point of no return and it would take to long to start over. I would not be suprised to see another add on order to the high pressure contract on top of the 8 with standard 2000gpm pumps to replace sandy damage however I wonder if there is a cap on how many they can add on to a small contrct.
A question for people in the know, some of the 2002/2003 rigs that are up for replacement are the engines on Staten Island that have the larger tank, 750 gallons instead of the standard 500 gallons. I have not seen anywhere that the large order from KME will have however many engines with larger tanks. Is it possible they are doing away with the larger tanks in those limited hydrant areas ?

Ferrara took quite a while to produce the first RM, so don't count out KME just yet. The body is probably the easy part, its the develop of the split-tilt stainless steel cab that is probably chewing up time. Also Ferrarra does not make the cab for the RMs, they are made by a third party builder, can't remember what manufactorer it was.
